Early etymologies of the word “industry” are rooted in skill, craft, and labor, but to think of media industries today is to consider elaborate institutional configurations that span the globe. The reach and effects of media industries are deeply entangled in our daily lives, from the words and images we consume, to the ways we see them, to the channels by which we interact with contemporary media. The Carsey-Wolf Center’s research in media industries approaches industry with initiatives that focus on craftspeople and media making, the routes through which modern media reach their audiences, the ways these audiences consume content, and the concentrations of power and corporate configurations that own and oversee media exchanges.
