Four young Chinese women from elite Shanghai families become stranded in the US when the communists take over Shanghai in 1948.  This film was based on a short story by Professor Kenneth Pai, UCSB Professor Emeritus, and directed by Academy of Motion Pictures and Directors’ Guild of America member Xie Jin.   The film will be presented in its original 35mm format.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Professor Pai, moderated by Professor Michael Berry of UCLA.  A reception will be held in the Michael Douglas Lobby after the discussion.

Hidden Figures is the incredible untold story of Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)—brilliant African-American women working at NASA in the 1960s. 

This UCSB Script to Screen presentation of the film will be followed by a Q&A with writer/producer/director Theodore Melfi, actor Kevin Costner and President of Fox 2000 Pictures, UCSB alumnae '77, and Carsey-Wolf Center Advisory Board member Elizabeth Gabler. The event will be moderated by the executive producer/host of Script to Screen, Matt Ryan.

From the award-winning short story by Ted Chiang, one of today’s most celebrated science fiction writers, comes Arrival, a story about mankind on the verge of a global war.  When mysterious spacecrafts touch down across the world, the military recruits an elite team to investigate, led by expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams). Louise must learn the aliens’ language in order to communicate with them, and the team must determine whether the aliens have come in peace or are a threat to humanity.

UCSB Script to Screen will host Screenwriter/Executive Producer Eric Heisserer for a post screening Q&A.
