This fellowship is designed to support UCSB faculty or advanced graduate students who would like to attend major film festivals and are willing to research potential programming opportunities for the Center while at the festival. In its programming for the Pollock Theater, the Center strives to bring unique, compelling films and diverse guests to campus. Fellowship recipients will be expected to attend festival events, evaluate potential guests, and make contact to assess their interest in visiting UCSB. Applicants may request up to $5000 in support for housing, travel, and festival fees. Graduate students who have received this award in the past are welcome to reapply for up to a maximum total of $8000.

Successful applicants will be asked to provide a report with at least five potential events for Carsey-Wolf Center consideration, with guests’ names and contact information. As appropriate, fellowship recipients will have the opportunity to serve as moderators for Pollock events that are derived from their suggestions. The fellowship report should be submitted within two weeks of completion of travel.

Applications for this fellowship will be accepted on a rolling basis, and adjudicated by members of the Carsey-Wolf Center staff. To apply, please send the following materials to carseywolfresearch@gmail.com, with a copy to Associate Director Emily Zinn: ezinn@carseywolf.ucsb.edu:

  • A description of your rationale for attending the festival, the kind of programming opportunities you hope to find there, and their relevance to one or more of the Carsey-Wolf Center’s main research areas: Global Media, Information Media, Media and Democracy, Media Industries, and Media and the Environment (no more than 1000 words)
  • A brief description of your relevant expertise and experience that would make you a good candidate to attend this festival to research potential visitors. For graduate student applicants, please mention any relevant coursework.
  • Your CV
  • A budget for proposed expenses for housing, travel, and festival fees

If you have questions about this fellowship, please contact Carsey-Wolf Center Director Patrice Petro (petro@filmandmedia.ucsb.edu) or Associate Director Emily Zinn (ezinn@carseywolf.ucsb.edu).
